Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that we insert into your jaw during a quick outpatient procedure. After placement, the implants fuse with your bone, providing a foundation for crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

Dental implants are stronger and more durable than traditional dental restorations. Many Dentists recommend them whenever possible because they can last a lifetime*.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer many benefits, including:

  • Improved speech
  • Confidence
  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Convenience
  • Durability

We might also recommend dental implants to improve your oral health. If you are missing permanent teeth, you are more likely to experience gum recession and bone loss. Dental implants can help reduce the risk of both of those issues.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

To get dental implants, we recommend you have healthy gums and enough jawbone to support the titanium posts. If your X-rays show gum disease or low bone volume, we might recommend a prerequisite treatment first, like scaling and root planing or a bone graft.

During your consultation, let us know if you have any underlying medical conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure. These conditions will not keep you from getting implants, but they may increase the risk of complications, so it is crucial we are aware.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At Calm Spring Dental, getting dental implants takes at least three visits.

First visit

If we determine that you are a candidate for implants, we numb your mouth with a local anesthetic and insert a series of implants into your jawbone. After placement, we provide you with recovery instructions and prescription medication.

Second visit

A few months later, when the implants have fused with the jawbone, you return to Calm Spring Dental. We take impressions of your mouth with an intraoral scanner and send them to a nearby dental lab. The lab uses your impressions to design and create custom restorations, like crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

Third visit

When your custom restorations are completed, you return to Calm Spring Dental. We administer a local anesthetic and attach your restorations to the dental implants. Then, we polish your teeth and explain how to care for them.

Do I need to maintain my dental implants?

There are several things you can do to maintain your dental implants. At Calm Spring Dental, we recommend:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Avoiding bad habits like biting your fingernails
  • Wearing a mouthguard when playing sports
  • Visiting Calm Spring Dental twice a year for dental cleaning
